Yellow Pine Pines are among the most commercially important of tree species, valued for their timber and wood pulp throughout the world. Commercial pines are grown in plantations for timber that is denser, more resinous, and therefore more durable than spruce. Pine wood is widely used to build furniture, window frames, paneling and floors.

Spruce Spruce wood, often called whitewood, is used for many purposes, ranging from general construction work and crates to highly specialized uses in wooden aircraft and many musical instruments, including guitars, mandolins, cellos, violins, and the soundboard at the heart of a piano. The Wright Brothers first aircraft was built of spruce.

Birch Birch wood is fine-grained and pale in colour, often with an attractive satin-like sheen. Ripple figuring may occur, increasing the value of the timber for veneer and furniture-making. Birch wood is suitable for veneer, and birch ply is among the strongest and most dimensionally-stable plywoods, although it is unsuitable for exterior use.

Fir The wood of most firs is considered unsuitable for general timber use, and is often used as pulp or for the manufacture of plywood and rough timber. Fir trees are very popular Christmas trees, generally considered to be the best trees for this purpose, with aromatic foliage that does not shed many needles on drying out.

Oak Oak wood has a density of about 0.75 g/cm³, great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very attractive grain markings, particularly when quarter-sawn. Oakwood is most commonly used for furniture making, flooring, timber frame buildings, and for veneer production.

Redwood Coast Redwood is one of the most valuable timber species in California, with 364,000 ha of redwood forest, all second growth, managed for timber production. Coast Redwood lumber is highly valued for its beauty, light weight, and resistance to decay. Its lack of resin makes it resistant to fire.

Cedar Cedars are very popular ornamental trees, widely used in horticulture in temperate climates where winter temperatures do not fall below about −25 °C. The Turkish Cedar is slightly hardier, to −30 °C or just below. Extensive mortality of planted specimens can occur in severe winters where temperatures do drop lower.

Treated Pine All measures that are taken to ensure a long life of wood fall under the definition wood preservation. There are a number of different preservatives and processes that can extend the life of wood, timber, wood structures or engineered wood. These generally increase the durability and resistance from being destroyed by insects or fungus.

White Pine Old growth pine in the Americas is a highly desired wood since huge, knot free, boards were the rule rather than the exception. Pine is commonly used for paneling, floors and furniture. Pine is also a favorite tree of loggers since pine logs can still be processed in a lumber mill a year or more after being cut down.
